The information pertains to licensed health care personnel, licensed dental care personnel and assistant nurses with vocational certificate in/under employment on the 1st of November during the year of interest. The information pertains to both individuals whom are employed by the government and individuals whom are employed within the private sector.
All employed specialised qualified doctors and dentists are included in the time series "Licensed healthcare professions 1995-" under each category as well as in the separate specialist time series. The same applies to employed nurses with specialist training, i.e. they are included both in the category of nurses in the above time series and in the separate time series for nurses with specialist training.
Since 1 July 2023, you need a vocational certificate from the National Board of Health and Welfare to use the title Assistant nurse. However, those who had permanent employment as an Assistant nurse when the new rules came into force may continue to use the title until 30 June 2033 without certification. They are not included in this database.
Information about specialist nurses
From the year of 2016, the statistics on specialist nurses are divided into two different time series. One series consists of data for the years 1995–2015 and the second for the years 2016 and beyond.
In the earlier series for the years 1995–2015, a group of specialist nurses with graduation years before 1977 are included. Specialist nurses with graduation years before 1977 are not included in the period from 2016 onwards. It is therefore not comparable with the time series for the years 1995–2015.
